Telegraph Herald Selects Merlin Digital Asset Management System to Create Integrated Digital Library

Quincy, MA, January 31, 2007 - The Telegraph Herald in Dubuque, Iowa has selected MerlinOne Inc.'s Digital Asset Management System to create a fully integrated text, photo, and graphic archive. This provides the staff with a single, centralized location to search and store content from the paper. Installation is scheduled for February 2007.

"For papers of all sizes the trend has been to set up a single archive that stores all of the publication's content, rather than maintain separate systems for photos, text, and so on. Of course, one motivation is the hardware, software and support savings from consolidating multiple systems. Yet, I believe the real benefit is the ability to manage all of the content in one place. That way, a writer with just a web browser can use Merlin's advanced digital asset management tools to search a topic and find all the related stories, text and graphics in seconds, in one go. In the Merlin digital asset management system, links can be made between stories and the accompanying photos and graphics, making it very simple to find what you need," said John Harrison, VP of Sales & Marketing at MerlinOne.

"Much of the workflow will be automated. The Telegraph Herald will flow published stories to the Merlin digital asset management software automatically from its new Jazbox front-end system. The digital asset management system will import stories in XML and use imbedded tags to populate appropriate content metadata fields. A unique two-way interface with the Jazbox editorial system will automatically update the publication history of photos while preventing duplicates from entering the library. Stories will be exported from the Merlin digital asset management system to third-party vendors, for resale," said Rande Simpson, Business Manager at MerlinOne.

Merlin will also serve as Dubuque's picture desk, taking selected Associated Press images from the AP Server, as well as, input of locally scanned and digital images from The Telegraph Herald's photo staff.

MerlinOne will import The Telegraph Herald's legacy NewsView text archive and legacy PhotoView picture archive into the Merlin digital asset management system so newsroom and library staffs will have seamless access to both new and legacy content when installation is completed. The Telegraph Herald, owned by multimedia company Woodward Communications, Inc., is published 365 days a year and reaches 28,421 households (34,006 on Sundays).
